किशोर स्कूली तनाव के कारण करते हैं धूम्रपान

इंडो-एशियन न्यूज सर्विसलंदन। अगर किशोरवय लड़के और लड़कियां शराब और धूम्रपान की ओर आकर्षित होते हैं तो इसका एक कारण पढ़ाई और स्कूल से जुड़ा तनाव भी है। इसका खुलासा एक नए अध्ययन में किया गया है।सालफोर्ड लोकल प्रशासन की मनोवैज्ञानिक पामेला टेलर ने 15 और 16 वर्ष के 172 लड़के-लड़कियों पर अध्ययन किया। टेलर ने कहा कि किशोर-किशोरी स्कूलों में कई दबावों को झेलते हैं। इसमें लगातार अच्छा परिणाम देने, लगातार परीक्षा और जीवन के महत्वपूर्ण निर्णयों को लेने का दबाव शामिल है।
शोध से पता चला कि छात्रों में सबसे ज्यादा तनाव पाठ्यक्रम से जुड़ा होता है। इसमें निश्चित समय पर पूरा करने की चिंता और शिक्षक के साथ छात्र का संबंध भी शामिल है।यद्यपि, अध्ययन से पता चला कि तनाव से मुक्ति के लिए अधिकतर छात्र संगीत सुनने, टीवी देखने, खेलने और व्यायाम करने जैसे उपायों का सहारा लेते हैं, लेकिन इनमें से कुछ शराब और धूम्रपान की गिरफ्त में आ गए।

एक कश से हो जाएगी शिशु की मौत
30 अगस्त 2008इंडो-एशियन न्यूज सर्विसवॉशिंगटन। गर्भावस्था के दौरान धूम्रपान करने वाली महिलाओं के नवजात शिशुओं की ‘सडन इंफैंट डेथ सिंड्रोम’ (सिड्स) यानी अचानक शिशु की मौत की आशंका बहुत बढ़ जाती है।कैलगरी विश्वविद्यालय के शोधकर्ताओं द्वारा किए गए अपनी तरह के इस पहले शोध में पाया गया कि जिन बच्चों की मांओं ने गर्भावस्था के दौरान धूम्रपान किया था, उनमें श्वसन संबंधी समस्याएं होती हैं।
विश्वविद्यालय में शिशु विभाग के प्रोफेसर शबीह हसन ने बताया, “गर्भावस्था के दौरान धूम्रपान दोधारी तलवार की तरह है। इससे न केवल महिलाओं के समयपूर्व प्रसव की आशंका रहती है बल्कि इससे बच्चों के सिड्स का शिकार होने की आशंका भी बढ़ जाती है।”हसन ने कहा कि समयपूर्व पैदा हुए बच्चों में श्वसन संबंधी समस्या की आशंका होती है। इससे पहले किए गए अध्ययनों से पता चला था कि कम ऑक्सीजन और अधिक कार्बन डॉयआक्साइड के मिश्रण से सिड्स का खतरा होता है, लेकिन अब तक धूम्रपान और सिड्स के संबंधों पर कोई अध्ययन नहीं हो पाया था।

दो अक्टूबर से कश लगाने के 200 रुपए!
09 सितम्बर 2008ibnlive.comनई दिल्ली। अब दो अक्टूबर के बाद से सार्वजनिक जगहों पर धूम्रपान करते पकड़े जाने पर आपको 200 रुपए का जुमाना भरना पड़ेगा। यह जानकारी केंद्रीय स्वास्थ्य मंत्री अंबुमणी रामदौस ने मंगलवार को दी।इस घोषणा उस निर्णय के एक हफ्ते के बाद हुई है जिसमें कहा गया था कि निजी कम्पनियां धूम्रपान करने वालों के लिए अलग कमरे मुहैया कराने का बहाना देकर बच नहीं सकती और ऐसा तब जब सरकार दो अक्टूबर से कम्पनियों के अंदर धूम्रपान लगाने वालों पर प्रतिबंध लगाने की पूरी तैयारी में है।रामदौस ने कहा, “किसी भी निजी अथवा सार्वजनिक इमारतों में धूम्रपान की अनुमति नहीं दी जाएगी। कम्पनियों के पास अब से धूम्रपान के लिए कोई अलग कमरा नहीं होगा। जो कश लगाना चाहते हैं उन्हें बाहर खुले में जाकर कश लगाना होगा।”रामदौस हमेशा से तम्बाकू और तम्बाकू उत्पादों पर प्रतिबंध लगाने में आगे रहे हैं।

सार्व‍जनिक जगहों पर धूम्रपान पर पाबंदी
30 सितम्‍बर 2008 आईबीएन-7 नई दिल्‍ली। केन्‍द्र सरकार ने आगामी 2 अक्‍टूबर से सार्वजनिक जगहों पर धूम्रपान करने पर पाबंदी लगा दी है। यदि कोई व्‍यक्ति सार्वजनिक जगह पर सिगरेट पीता हुआ पकड़ा गया तो उसे 200 रुपए का जुर्माना किया जाएगा।इधर उच्‍चतम न्‍यायालय ने भी इस कानून पर अंतरिम रोक लगाने से इंकार कर दिया है। इस कानून के तहत अदालत, अस्‍पताल, रेलवे स्‍टेशन, बस स्‍टैंड, वकील या आर्किटेक्‍ट का ऑफिस, शॉपिंग मॉल, पार्क तथा दूसरी सार्वजनिक जगहों पर सिगरेट पीने पर पाबंदी लगा दी गई है। खास बात यह है कि होटल भी इस कानून के दायरे में शामिल किए गए हैं। यदि होटल में कोई आदमी सिगरेट पीते पकड़ा जाएगा तो होटल प्रबंधन पर भी जुर्माना किया जाएगा। इस कानून का तंबाकू कंपनियों ने विरोध किया है। अब देखना यह होगा कि यह कानून सही प्रकार से लागू हो पाता है या नहीं। या इसे भी अन्‍य दूसरे कानून की तरह धुंए में उड़ा दिया जाता है।

धूम्रपान से गर्भस्थ शिशु को कैंसर का खतरा
14 जनवरी 2009इंडो-एशियन न्यूज सर्विससिडनी। धूम्रपान करने वाली महिलाओं के पेट में पल रहे शिशु को कैंसर होने की आशंका बढ़ जाती है। यह जानकारी ताजा शोध में सामने आई हैं।कैंसर इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ न्यू साउथ वेल्स (एनएसडब्ल्यू) ने इस बात के पक्के सबूत उपलब्ध कराए हैं कि गर्भावस्था में धूम्रपान करने से कमजोर तथा कम वजन वाले शिशु पैदा होते हैं और ऐसे नवजात शिशुओं को गहन चिकित्सा कक्ष (आईसीयू) में रखना पड़ता है। उप स्वास्थ्य मंत्री (कैंसर) जोडी मैक्के ने कहा कि, “इस शोध के जरिए हमें इस बात के पक्के सबूत प्राप्त हुए हैं कि गर्भावस्था में धूम्रपान करने से नवजात शिशुओं में कैंसर का खतरा बढ़ सकता है।”कैंसर इंस्टीट्यूट ने एनएसडब्ल्यू में 1994 से 2005 के बीच पैदा हुए शिशुओं के आंकड़े को इसी कालखंड के दौरान यहां पैदा हुए कैंसरग्रस्त शिशुओं के आंकड़े के साथ मिलान किया। इसके तहत पाया गया कि कुल 10.5 लाख नवजात शिशुओं में 948 शिशु कैंसर ग्रस्त

सिगरेट पीने पर अजय देवगन ने भुगता चालान

चंडीगढ़ [जासं]। बालीवुड अभिनेता अजय देवगन को चंडीगढ़ एयरपोर्ट व कुराली रेलवे स्टेशन पर सिगरेट का कश लगाना महंगा पड़ गया। स्मोक फ्री सिटी में सिगरेट पीने की सजा के रूप उनको जुर्माना भरना पड़ा।
रेलवे स्टेशन पर कश लगाने में अजय के साथ अभिनेता सलमान खान के खिलाफ भी आरपीएफ ने चालान काटा था। शुक्रवार को अजय देवगन के सचिव परमजीत सिंह ने एसडीएम ईस्ट की कोर्ट में चंडीगढ़ के एयरपोर्ट पर सिगरेट पीने की सजा के रूप चालान का भुगतान कर दिया। सिगरेट पीने का मामला उठने पर पुलिस ने होटल जाकर फिल्म यूनिट के एक सदस्य को चालान सौंपा था।
उधर, जुर्माना अदा करने के बाद भी शुक्रवार को गांव अधंहेड़ी में शूटिंग के दौरान अभिनेता अजय देवगन सरेआम कश लगाते देखे गए। हालांकि चालान काटे जाने से सतर्क फिल्म की टीम ने शूटिंग स्थल पर किसी को फटकने नहीं दिया। कुराली थाने के एसएचओ केसर सिंह अजय देवगन के सिगरेट पीने की पुष्टि की है।
गौरतलब है कि कुराली रेलवे स्टेशन के प्लेटफार्म पर दो दिन तक चली 'लंदन ड्रीम्स' फिल्म की शूटिंग के दौरान अभिनेता अजय देवगन, सलमान खान और टीम के अन्य सदस्यों ने सिगरेट पी थी। इस संबंध में दैनिक जागरण ने सात जनवरी के अंक में 'प्रतिबंध के बावजूद सिगरेट पी' शीर्षक से समाचार प्रकाशित किया था। आरपीएफ के इंचार्ज धर्मवीर ढोके ने बताया कि दोनों के खिलाफ चालान काटा था। साथ ही दो-दो सौ रुपए का जुर्माना किया गया था।

बचपन को चबा रहा है गुटखा

इंडो-एशियन न्यूज सर्विसलखनऊ। बारह साल के राहुल का मुंह अब पूरा नहीं खुल पाता। उसके मुंह में छाले पड़े हुए हैं जो अब धीरे-धीरे जख्म का बनते जा रहे हैं। उसे खाना तो दूर चाय और ठंडा पानी पीने में भी दिक्कत होती है लेकिन फिर भी वह पान-मसाले की कम से कम पंद्रह पुड़िया रोज खा जाता है।चिनहट के प्रकाश कॉन्वेंट के कक्षा आठ में पढ़ने वाले राहुल को गुटखा खाने की यह आदत होश सम्भालते ही लगी थी। वह बताता है स्कूल के कुछ छात्रों की देखा-देखी उसने भी गुटखा खाना शुरू कर दिया।
शुरुआत में वह पान-मसाले का एक पाउच थोड़ा-थोड़ा करके खाता था, धीरे-धीरे आदत बढ़ती गई। अब वह खाने के बगैर तो रह सकता है मगर मसाले के बिना नहीं।पैसा कहां से लाते हो? घर पर डांट नहीं पड़ती? सवालों के जवाब में राहुल कहता है, “पहले बहुत मार पड़ती थी। रही बात पैसे की तो बस किसी न किसी बहाने से व्यवस्था हो जाती है।”
यह एक अकेले राहुल की कहानी नहीं है। गली-कूचों से लेकर चौराहों तक हर मोड़ पर पान-मसाले की आसान बिक्री ने मासूम बचपन को भी काफी हद तक अपने शिकंजे में जकड़ लिया है। स्कूल के आसपास बेतरतीब लगी पान की गुमटियों पर इस बचपन को कैंसर की तरफ कदम बढ़ाते कभी भी देखा जा सकता है। तोतली जबान अब टॉफी, चॉकलेट की बजाय गुटके की आदी होती जा रही है।पहले पान मसाला व तम्बाकू का प्रयोग करने वाले और इनके आदी हो गए लोगों पर अमेरिकी पर्यावरण संरक्षण एजेंसी ने एक सर्वेक्षण कराया था। इसके नतीजे चौंकाने वाले थे।भारत की सबसे घनी आबादी वाले उत्तर प्रदेश के संबध में ईपीए की रिपोर्ट बताती है कि यहां 15 वर्ष से कम आयु के दो लाख 45 हजार ग्रामीण इलाकों के तथा 16,900 शहरी क्षेत्रों के बच्चे ऐसे हैं जो तम्बाकू या गुटखा के पूरी तरह आदी हो चुके हैं।चौंकाने वाली बात यह भी है कि तम्बाकू के लती इन बच्चों व युवाओं में 66 हजार अनुसूचित जनजाति से तथा 67 लाख अनुसूचित जाति के परिवार से होते हैं। इन सब में एक लाख 11 हजार 490 तम्बाकू सेवन के चलते प्रति वर्ष मौत को गले लगा लेते हैं।ऐसा नहीं है कि ग्रामीण या गरीब तबके से जुड़े बच्चे ही पान मसाले की लत के आदी हो रहे हैं। आभिजात्य वर्ग व मध्यम वर्गीय घर के बच्चे भी इसकी चपेट में आसानी से देखे जा सकते हैं।प्रदेश में कैंसर के बारे में वर्षों से निःशुल्क जागरूकता अभियान चला रहे लखनऊ के किंग जॉर्ज मेडिकल विश्वविद्यालय में प्रोफेसर और विकिरण विभाग के अध्यक्ष डॉ. मोहन चंद पंत कहते हैं कि अगर सरकार इस ओर जल्द जागरूक नहीं हुई तो यकीनन भावी पीढ़ी का भविष्य 15-20 साल बाद भयावह होगा।

मध्‍यप्रदेश के एक गांव में गुटखा खाने पर जुर्माना
इंदौर। मध्यप्रदेश के खंडवा जिले के चिंचगोहना भैरोखेडा गांव आज कल सुर्खियों में है। इस गांव में तम्बाकू और इससे बने उत्पादों पर प्रतिबंध लगा हुआ है। जिसकी चर्चा अब विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन में भी हो रही है। उल्लेखनीय है कि यहां के ग्रामीणों द्वारा तम्बाकू और उसके बने उत्पादों पर स्वप्रेरणा से लगाए गए प्रतिबंध को विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन की दक्षिण एशिया पर केंद्रित एक रिपोर्ट में मिसाल के तौर पर पेश किया गया है। तम्बाकू रहित दक्षिण एशिया क्षेत्र में भारत के बारे में संगठन की रिपोर्ट में खंडवा जिले के इस गांव की पहल का उल्लेख किया गया है। रिपोर्ट के अनुसार 40 वर्षीय महिला की मुंह के कैंसर के कारण मृत्यु हो जाने के हादसे से गांववासी दहल गए। महिला तम्बाकू का गुटखा खाने की आदी थी। इसके बाद ही ग्रामीणों ने एक बैठक कर तय किया कि गांव में गुटखा आदि सामग्री की बिक्री नहीं होनी चाहिए जो बीमारी और मौत का कारण बने। इसके बाद गांव के 30 पान और गुमटी वालों ने गुटखा आदि की बिक्री बंद करने का संकल्प लिया। इंदौर स्थित शासकीय डेन्टल कालेज के प्राचार्य बी.एम श्रीवास्तव ने बताया कि गांव में गुटखा खाते हुए पकड़े जाने पर जुर्माने का प्रावधान भी किया गया है। उन्होंने बताया कि इस रिपोर्ट के अलावा भी खंडवा जिले के इस उदाहरण का अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर जिक्र हुआ है।

Cancer patients, families affected by tobacco file petitions across the country as pack warnings notification is ignored by tobacco industry
[Lucknow– December 1, 2008]

Cancer patients and their families filed at least seven cases in different district and high court today in anticipation of the implementation of the notification of graphic health warning on all tobacco products.
Earlier last week, tobacco control advocates in India, based on media reports and through Government sources found out that the Group of Ministers were working to delay implementation of the notification yet again. The implementation of pictorial health warnings on tobacco product packages was to come in to effect from November 30, 2008.
Since no notification has been issued by the Government as of November 30, concerned citizens across the country have filed. But there plea for justice failed when the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare sprung up a notification, dated November 28, 2008, reversing the directive to implement pack warnings.

The GOM has time and again deferred implementation of pack warnings on tobacco packages (see timeline). “The government is failing from performing its important duty to provide essential information to make Indian consumers aware of the effects of tobacco, particularly to the vulnerable poor and the illiterate”, says Aloke Gupta of Sonebhadra, whose father suffers from lung cancer, possibly caused by his excessive smoking of bidis and cigarettes.

“As a doctor I see several cases of illiterate people who do not know the perils of tobacco use. Pictorial warnings would have proved to be good deterrent for those taking up tobacco use and encourage users to quit. These were already diluted and make ineffective, and now they are taken off altogether. Politics has yet again trumped public health”, says Dr. Sanjay Kumar Rai, a doctor in Varanasi and petitioner whose petition was rejected this morning.

The tobacco industry continues to perpetuate the myth that pack warnings and other tobacco control initiatives will make the government lose revenues and get poor and marginal communities would lose employment that the tobacco industry offers.

In the meantime, young people continue to get lured to tobacco products and are not fully aware of the serious health implications. “There is little political will to implement public health initiatives. Tobacco industry has made deep inroad into the Government. By using employment and revenue argument to protect tobacco industry, the Government is falling to perverse arguments of the industry. This patronage of the Government is insensitive and any efforts by civil society are proving to be ineffective to reign in the use of tobacco” says says Ashutosh Sing of the Indian Media Centre for Journalists, a Lucknow based organisation that has been working towards creating awareness on the harms of tobacco use.

“Overall, 14.7 percent of Indian students use tobacco. The number of new users of tobacco from February 1, 2007 to May 31, 2009 (the supposed date when pack warning will be notified) will be in a couple of millions”, according to a public health scientist who wishes to remain unnamed.

Basic facts about tobacco and health
= Tobacco causes lung disease, cancer, heart disease, low birth weight and increased infant death as well as other problems in those exposed.
= More than 5 million people are killed by tobacco each year – more than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. In this century, unless urgent action is taken, tobacco could kill more than 1 billion people.
= Tobacco kills 50 to 75 percent of its users and on average “15 years prematurely”.
= Smoking causes 10% of the 10 million (1 crore) deaths per year from all causes. 70% of smoking deaths are in middle age (30-69): 700,000 (7 lakh); 600,000 men and 100,000 women 1 in 5 of all adult male deaths and 1 in 20 of all adult female deaths in middle age
= Over 1/2 of smoking deaths are in illiterate adults India's toll of tobacco-related deaths is expected to rise from about 9,00,000 annually to 930,000 by the year 2010, and bidis to exceed 1 million annually by 2013 currently account. For 77 percent of the market for smoked tobacco. Studies indicate that bidi smokers are five to six times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers. Pack warnings therefore become essential to inform the illiterate and the young who are about to take up the habit.
= Medical costs from smoking impoverish several million people in India. The annual cost in India for treating Tobacco related cancers, coronary artery disease and chronic obstructive lung disease is conservatively estimated at INR 27,761 Crore (USD 6.5 billion)

About pack warnings
= The effectiveness of pack warnings is well established by rigorous scientific studies globally and endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO)
= Despite the tobacco industry’s and the GoM’s dire predictions and their gullibility, numerous independent studies have shown that pack warnings do not have a negative economic impact or impact employment of people. The effects are very log term and the Government (in particular Ministry of Commerce) as part of global and national commitments has to works towards alternative plans for employment and livelihood to those dependent on tobacco cultivation and industry.

Rajamundhury, Andhra Pradesh: August 19, 2008: Tobacco cultivation is engulfing cotton in Andhra Pradesh (AP). But before the steps for discouraging tobacco cultivation can be thought of, it spreads across from the banks of Krishna to the Godavari. Tobacco plantation starts in September and by January it is in full bloom in the markets. In the last season, the sale of tobacco at Rs. 142 per kg has further accelerated the shift in cultivation demand. The farmers are having a field day. The traditional crops are losing out due to the shift in the farmers’ changing preferences. These were some of the concerns shared by the farmers in a meeting on alternate cropping organised on Tuesday in Rajamundhury. This meeting was called on behalf of the Indian Society for Tobacco Sciences (ISTS), Central Tobacco Research Institute and the Tobacco board. In the meeting, the farmers voiced their opposition to the alternate cropping. They argued that the alternate crops will not give them a good profit as tobacco cultivation does. Suggested alternate crops include Soyabeen, Chickpeas or Garbanzo Beans, Eucalyptus, Subabul (Leucaena leucocephala), Lemongrass and Basil among others.

On the other hand, statistics show that not only has the production of tobacco increased, but the preference for its cultivation has also increased. A big part of the tobacco used in the cigarettes is produced in AP, while the rest is from Karnataka. In 2005-06, tobacco production was 145.36 lakh ton in AP, which rose to 171.95 lakh ton. However, it was accepted that there had been a slight fall in the production in 2008 due to the changing environment. In this way,, the demand for tobacco cultivation in 2005-06 rose from 1 lakh 17 thousand hectare to 1 lakh 26 thousand hectare in 2007-08. Speaking to the Jansatta paper the tobacco board’s production controller, APV Varda Sthapak*** acknowledged the rise in the demand for tobacco cultivation.
The increasing affluence among the farmers in AP can be seen right along the coastal area stretching from Guntur to Rajamundhury. As one farmer, Srinivasan Rao from Guntur’s Chheprole village states, “We were facing loses in Cotton cultivation. Whereas the rates for tobacco being sold went up to Rs. 142 per kg. Why would then one go for cotton cultivation? The profit from the tobacco cultivation is a reason why many farmers now increasingly prefer tobacco over other traditional crops.” The chairman of the tobacco board, Suresh Babu stated, “It is true that there is an increased demand for tobacco cultivation. One of the reasons for this is the increased profits from tobacco in the last season. But the govt. is now seriously thinking about measures for controlling the tobacco production. In the coming few years, the govt. plans to reduce the demand for production of tobacco by half. But the whole programme/measures will be implemented in phases. So far as the profit from the tobacco cultivation is concerned, I am with you.”

Workshop in Bhopal, October 8, 2008

Following the briefings agenda throughout Hindi speaking states of India, IMCFJ organized its third workshop on Tobacco control in the state capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, on Wednesday, October 8th 2008. About 50 confirmed and students journalists attended the conference.

The wrokshop agenda was similar to the former ones in Varanasi and Dehradun, but the atmosphere was definitely more into debating on how and what journalists should write about tobacco, in dynamic exchanges of ideas between the speakers and the participants.

The debates inspired aslo the students as for Mr. Himanshu Bajpai from Makhan Lal Chaturvedi University of Bhopal, who wrote the following report on his blog, which link is available in the link list on the right side of this window :

२००६ में बिपाशा बासु ने ओंकारा में जो बीडी जलाई थी उसके कश में पूरा हिन्दुस्तान झूमा था । गुलज़ार साहब को और सुनिधि चौहान को इस गाने ने सिने अवार्ड्स भी दिलाया था । ये उस साल का सबसे बड़ा हिट नंबर था , जिसने उस साल f.m. चैनलों और संगीत कंपनियों को १ करोड़ से जयादा मुनाफा दिया था लेकिन इस ओंकारा की ये बीडी सिर्फ़ एक साल यानी २००६ तक ही सुलगी थी। जबकि वो बीडी जिसका सुट्टा आम भारतीय लगाते हैं उसकी आग ओंकारा की बिल्लो चमन बहार की जिगर की आग से भी बड़ी है । जिसमें हर साल जलते हैं करीब दस लाख आदमी और तीस हज़ार करोड़ रुपए ।लोगों को बीडी से जुड़े मिथक , भ्रांतियों और खतरों के बारे में जागरूक करने का जिम्मा इस बार पत्रकारों ने लिया है । लखनऊ स्थित इंडियन सेंटर ऑफ़ मीडिया फॉर जर्नलिस्ट ने कुछ एन जी ओ और फ्रांस की इंटरनेशनल यूनियन अगेंस्ट टीबी एंड लंग दिजीस के साथ करने के लिए प्रेरित करने और इसके लिए जानकारी और संसाधन उपलब्ध कराने का काम कार्यशाला आयोजन शुरू किया है . इस मुहीम को नाम दिया गया है जर्नलिस्ट to जर्नलिस्ट . लखनऊ और बनारस के बाद 8 अक्टूबर को श्रंखला का आयोजन भोपाल में हुआ, आयोजन में लखनऊ जनसत्ता के वरिष्ठ पत्रकार अम्बरीश कुमार , हिंदुस्तान के दयाशंकर शुक्ला सागर और जामिया मिलिया के शाहिद जम्माल सहित बहुत से पत्रकारों ने हिस्सा लिया , जिसमे बीडी से जुड़े कई खतरनाक तथ्य सामने आएई आर सी के भारत पर लिखे गए आलेख के मुताबिक भारत में हर साल ७५ खरब से १२० खरब बीड़ी धुंए के रूप में उड़ा दी जाती है । देश में उत्पादित कुल तम्बाकू का ४८ % हिस्सा बीडी में उपयोग होता है . भारत में ये भ्रान्ति भी आम है की बीडी सिग्रत्ते से कम नुक्सान दायक है , इंटरनेशनल जर्नल ऑफ़ एपिदेमियोलोजी के अनुसार बीडी में जोखिम 1.६४ प्रतिशत है जबकि सिगरेट में १.३७ % । सिगरेट के मुकाबले बीडी में ३ गुना ज्यादा तारकोल और निकोटिन होता है और इसे जलाये रखने के लिए ज्यादा गहरे कश लगाए जाते हैं । सिगरेट में लगाया जाने वाला फिल्टर भी सिगरेट के नुक्सान को बिल्कुल कम नही करता और सिगरेट और बीडी के चलते हर ८ सेकेंड में दुनिया का एक आदमी दम तोड़ता है , जबकि भारत में एक सिगरेट के स्थान पर १० बीडी पी jaatin हैं . भारत के तम्बाकू उत्पादक राज्यों में तम्बाकू का रकबा एक दम से बढ़ा है क्यूंकि इसमें लाभ ज्यादा है और इसीलिए तम्बाकू से जुड़े ज्यादातर किसान करोर्पति है । एक और चौकाने वाली बात ये है की सिगरेट पर उत्पादन शुल्क भार जहाँ 1.०९२ रुपए है वहीँ बीडी पर 0.००७ है । यही कारण है की बीडी सिगरेट पर भारी है , भारत में बीडी एक बहुत बड़ा महामानव है , जिसकी गंभीरता पर आमतौर पर विचार नही किया जाता लेकिन अगली बार जब आप बीडी कओ मुह से लगायें तो उससे पहले इस बात पर गौर करें की भारत में सबसे ज्यादा लोगों की मौत का कारण बीडी , सिगरेट का धुंआ है

Dehradun

The Dehradun workshop of September 26th got a quite important coverage by the local media (see the slideshow down right "Articles Dehradun", with an excerpt of what could have been seen in the papers the day the conference) with articles on Hindi papers such as Hindustan, Rastrya Sahara, Dainik Jagran or Compact.

Mussoorie

IMCFJ members met the Municipal Commissioner in Mussoorie on the day following the workshop in Dehradun, and submitted him a petition , requesting him to urgently conform to the new smoking initiatives of the central government. Therefore, it was decided that from today, 2 October, there would be a ban on smoking in all public places in Mussoorie.

This new resolution has been covered by the local media (see on the slideshow down left "Articles Mussoorie") with articles in the Himachal Times, Compact, Hindustan or Amar Ujala, both in English and in Hindi.

Dehradun : Second workshop

Workshop in Dehradun, September 26, 2008

The second J2J briefing organised by IMCFJ took place in the capital city of the state of Uttarakhand, Dehradun, on Friday, September 26th, 2008. More than 50 journalists were present and 20 Master students in Mass Communication from Institute of Media Studies (IMS) a leading journalism school in Dehradun. The journalists were from Uttarakhand and West Uttar pradesh, the target region of the briefing.

The agenda was slightly different from the one in Varanasi, with more short movies about the specific tobacco issues in India and definitely more space to discussion between the audience and the speakers.

Following the meeting, IMCFJ members and J2J faculty were invited by the Commissioner of Musoorie, the popular hill resort, 25 kilometres from Dehradun to help the city of Musoorie go smoke free before October 2. IMCFJ convener, Ashutosh Singh and resident representative, Dhananjay Singh in Musoorie assured the members of the Municipal Corporation that they will help in creating awareness and ensuring that broadbased support is given to smokefree initiatives.

Varanasi : First workshop

Workshop in Varanasi, September 19-20, 2008:

IMCFJ organized a two days workshop in Varanasi in September 19-20, 2008. The aim of this workshop was to give awareness to Hindi writing and speaking journalists of the region (East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar) about tobacco issues worldwide and specifically in India which is the second largest consumer of tobacco and hence, one of the most concerned countries about tobacco related diseases as they cause millions of deaths.

The workshop entitled “Journalists to journalists briefing on tobacco control issues” was lead by a group of 7 persons who gave PowerPoint presentations and answered the many questions asked by participants. All of them were leading together the different debates raised during the workshop.

The public was composed essentially by Hindi writing and speaking journalists, most of them members of the IMCFJ network. Ultimately these journalists are expected to write on tobacco related issues and the success of this workshop will be complete when such articles will be published in local newspaper (see the slideshow "Articles Varanasi 19/09/2008" below, down right).

Announcement for Media briefing on tobacco control efforts by Indian Media Centre for Journalists, Lucknow

On behalf of the Indian Media Centre for Journalists (IMCFJ), Lucknow, we are pleased to invite you to a series of briefing and Journalist to journalists briefing on tobacco control issues. The briefing and journalist to journalist (J2J) interaction are being organised across the 10 Hindi and Urdu speaking states of north India (please see the proposed itinerary below). On May 31, 2008 IMCFJ organised a briefing in Lucknow for over 200 editors, proprietors and journalists of Hindi and Urdu press to discuss, debate and build consensus around the role of journalists in addressing serious health concerns like tobacco use and inspiring journalists to report actively on this issue.

Objective
Globally, India is the second largest consumer of tobacco and is the cause of millions of deaths in India. Smoking alone causes 10% of the 10 million (1 crore) deaths that occur in India per year. Despite this tobacco remains poorly regulated. For the Government of India, tobacco industry is a source of revenue and therefore it deliberately subverts policy interventions and effective enforcement. Despite sound laws, and deterrents like taxes and bans on advertising and promotion, these together are inefficient deterrents for vulnerable groups especially the young and the poor in getting addicted to tobacco for life. There is little political will or sustained commitment to control the devastating impact that tobacco products can have.

About the J2J programme
The J2J sessions are informal presentations, made by senior journalists and development professionals. Short presentation and use of films and case studies (about 40 per cent) followed by discussions and debates (about 60 percent of time) is the general form of pedagogy. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, challenge existing belief, science and wisdom and present local facts and realities in debates.
